Feeling Unworthy? Here Are 5 Essential Questions to Ask Yourself
Hello everyone, Ralph Estep Jr. here from Truth Unveiled with Ralph, where my mission is to pull the mask off cultural lies and bring us back to the powerful truths found in Jesus. Today, I am not offering a lecture but rather a fireside chat to tackle a widespread, yet seldom addressed feeling—unworthiness.
The Lie of Unworthiness
The lie of feeling unworthy is persistent and often whispers in our ears, "If you were truly called, would you feel this insecure?" It's an everyday battle, one many of us grapple with when we see curated lives and achievements on social media. God has placed an answer to this lie right in Exodus, at the burning bush moment with Moses. The truth is, culture disciples us with scrolls urging us to be flawless, but God provides a different narrative, one rooted in grace.
Moses' Five Questions
Moses felt unworthy too, asking God five critical questions, and each served as a platform for God to reveal His infinite grace and presence.
- Who Am I? Often, when our past weighs us down, we ask this question. Like Moses, when asked to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, we might question our worthiness. But God’s answer isn’t a checklist of Moses’ qualifications; it’s His promise, “I will be with you.”
- Who Are You? Inquiring about God's identity reveals our struggle with trusting Him. God simply declares, “I am,” emphasizing His constancy and sufficiency.
- What If They Don’t Believe Me? Fear of rejection is universal. God reassures us as He did Moses, providing signs and reminders of His truth.
- I’m Not Good at This. We compare our gifts to others, much like Moses lamented his lack of eloquence. God reminds us that He equipped us, reaffirming, “I will help you speak.”
- Please Send Someone Else. The raw truth is surrendering to God’s call despite our fear. God’s faithfulness shines through even when we feel inadequate.
Moving Beyond Unworthiness
Whether at home, work, or church, societal pressures often amplify feelings of inadequacy. Breaking through this requires practical steps:
1. Name the Moment: Acknowledge the feelings of unworthiness instead of burying them.
2. Find the Lie: Identify the script or lie you’ve believed for too long.
3. Answer with One Promise: Anchor yourself in one Biblical truth or promise.
4. Take the Next Faithful Step: Don’t aim for perfection; just take one faithful step forward.
5. Get an Aaron: Find a trustworthy person to support and accompany you on your journey.
A Prayer for Release
Surrender isn’t about readiness but trusting in God’s faithfulness. Today, I invite you to say a prayer acknowledging the weight of feeling unworthy and embracing God’s promise to be with you. Remember, God never called you to perfection but offers His unwavering presence.
