Embracing the Gospel of Control: Finding True Peace Beyond Certainty
In our bustling world, anxiety seems to be a constant companion for many. It creeps into our lives under the disguise of responsibility and planning, whispering promises of comfort and control while silently stealing our peace. This week's episode delves into this elusive "Gospel of Control," shedding light on why even the best-laid plans leave us feeling fragile and how true peace can only be found in surrender.
### The Gospel of Control: A Counterfeit Savior
In our ceaseless quest to stay ahead, plan meticulously, and organize thoroughly, we often find that our sense of peace remains fragile. Planning isn't inherently bad—it is a tool for order, a testament to responsibility. Yet, when planning morphs into our savior, holding us together rather than serving as a mere guide, peace becomes as breakable as glass.
We easily buy into culture's message: If you can plan, predict, and control enough, you will find safety. But this isn't the truth. In reality, control is fear in disguise—a fear that masquerades as order but only leads to exhaustion. It demands our attention, energy, and even our sleep, with no promise of a worry-free tomorrow. True peace, biblically speaking, does not come from certainty but from surrender.
### Experiencing Anxiety: A Common Companion
Anxiety today is rampant. According to the CDC, 12.1% of US adults regularly experience feelings of worry and anxiety. Even more staggering, the National Institute of Mental Health reports that nearly 20% of adults faced an anxiety disorder last year. Anxiety has become the norm for so many, but the answer isn’t a stronger grip or tighter control.
To fight anxiety, we need a stronger foundation—and not the kind built on certainty. Instead, we need a foundation built on surrender to an unchanging God. Jesus challenges us with the notion that worry adds no value to life, exposing the lie that worry equals control, when in reality, it only leads to exhaustion. Seeking His kingdom first anchors us in the present moment, for worry robs today in the guise of planning for tomorrow.
### The Responsible Spiral: Misplaced Weight
Reflecting on my own life, I realize that even when everything is perfectly aligned—deadlines met, budgets balanced, schedules followed—I still feel a weight on my shoulders. It's the realization that beneath those responsible actions lurks a fear of losing everything, a fear cloaked as responsibility. Yet, God doesn't call us to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. He calls us to be faithful and to surrender the outcomes.
### The Three Buckets of Control
When we feel overwhelmed by anxiety, it often boils down to three main areas: outcomes, people, and perception. Let's decipher each:
1. **Outcomes** - This bucket represents our attempts to control results and timelines, falsely equating certainty with safety. The liberation here lies in open-handed planning—being faithful, doing our part, yet surrendering the harvest to God.
2. **People** - Here, we start managing and controlling others' emotions and actions, out of fear of conflict or failure. Instead, we should love faithfully, releasing the control of others’ responses to God.
3. **Perception** - The performance bucket is where we find ourselves trying to maintain an image, often afraid of being exposed. True surrender means letting go of the need to be admired and finding strength in being anchored.
### Surrender as a Practical Step
So, what's the next practical step? Start by identifying which of these "buckets" you are holding onto tightly. Confront this with open hands and a steady heart as you take one practical step forward, trusting God with what you cannot control. Whether it’s making a difficult phone call, setting boundaries, or simply letting go of a tight grip, let go of the need to control and trust in God's unfailing presence.
### Open Hands, Steady Heart
Remember, you don’t need to stop planning, but stop worshiping planning. Wisdom makes a plan; fear demands a promise. God never promised a life free of pain, but He promised His unwavering presence. Your peace, therefore, should not be built on certainty but on God, allowing you to plan and still breathe, work and still rest.
I invite you to embrace open hands and a steady heart, stepping away from the gospel of control and into a life anchored on unshakeable truth.
