Understanding Budgeting Myths:

While some people equate budgeting to restrictive handcuffs, I invite you to explore its potential for liberation. A shocking statistic reveals that less than half of U.S. households maintain a budget. Can you imagine the influence this has on financial stress and anxiety?  

I know firsthand the havoc financial chaos can wreak on marriages and personal peace. As an accountant with over 30 years of experience, you might expect me to have always embraced budgeting. However, it took time for me to appreciate a budget’s benefits fully. My wife and I faced financial anxiety until we recognized the value of having a plan. Money was controlling us because we weren’t telling it what to do. Let’s delve into how a budget can help reclaim control. 

The Spiritual Cost of Financial Chaos:

Moving beyond the financial, there’s a substantial spiritual cost to living without a budgeting plan. When financial chaos robs us of peace, it becomes a spiritual issue. God calls us to be good stewards of what He provides us. Without planning and budgeting, we can't fulfill this calling. Contrasting society’s views with biblical truth, I boldly claim that the world often lies to us, suggesting that budgeting is unnecessary. This falsehood leads to anxiety, depression, and the feeling of being controlled by money. 

A God-First Budget as a Spiritual Act:

God's solution lies in stewardship, a spiritual act that aligns your financial life with His teachings. Proverbs 21:5 wisely advises that "the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance." Practicing diligent planning through budgeting can help prevent financial poverty. Remember, a budget is not a restrictive diet but a plan that expresses true stewardship, honoring what God has given us. 

Practical Steps to a God-First Budget:

1. Track Your Spending: The first and most challenging step is knowing where your money is going. For at least a month, track every single dollar you spend honestly. This transparency reveals spending habits that need attention.

2. Create a Simple Budget: Simplify your budget into three categories: Give, Save, and Live. Give as the scripture commands, save for yourself and emergencies, and allocate an amount to live on. Assign every dollar a job on paper and monitor your spending against this plan.

3. Compare and Adjust: Use your budget as a compass, regularly comparing intended spending against actual spending. This approach allows for financial control, enabling you to give yourself permission to spend wisely.

The Importance of Prayer and Gratitude:

Pray for financial discipline and express gratitude for God's provisions. Recognize that everything we have is a gift from Him, and steward it wisely. Through prayer and intentional financial planning, the cycle of financial stress can be broken.
